WHAT IS COUPLES THERAPY (GOTTMAN METHOD)?

Gottman’s Couples Therapy is a form of couples-based therapy and education that stems from the relationship research of John Gottman, psychologist and researcher, and his wife Julie Gottman, clinical psychologist. As an intervention, it focuses on developing the skills and understanding necessary for partners to maintain fondness and admiration, turn toward each other to get their needs met, and manage conflict. It also emphasises the importance of how couples can repair their relationship when they are hurt by one another.

Within therapy sessions, you and your partner will be supported to identify ways to increase closeness and friendship behaviors, address conflict more productively, and build a life of shared meaning.

The primary goals of the Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to:

  • Disarm conflicting verbal communication

  • Increase intimacy, respect, and affection

  • Remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and

  • Create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship .

HOW TO GET STARTED IN COUPLES THERAPY

Session 1: Initial Session as a Couple (50 - 100min)

In this session, you will be supported to explore the history of your relationship and develop an understanding of how your relationship has transformed over time. Questionnaires will be sent to you after this session to provide further information about your relationship, strengths and challenges.

Session 2 & 3: Individual Sessions (50min each)

Individual sessions are then completed with each member of the dyad to allow for a greater understanding of your personal history, family-of-origin, hopes, and expectations of therapy. Both partners will have the opportunity to share their individual history and experiences within the relationship.

Session 4: Shared Feedback Session (100min)

In this shared session, your therapist will provide an overview of your relational strengths and challenges, and help you to deepen your relational understanding of one another. Various resources may be provided and you will collaboratively develop a plan a plan to re-build trust, insight and closeness as a couple.

Session 5: Shared Treatment Sessions

Subsequent sessions will utilise the targeted Gottman intervention techniques for you to practice and implement between sessions as a couple, with the goal to enhance closeness and intimacy, replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions, and create a meaningful life together.
